Darseys Is Refocusing on Better & Best — Because Value Is More Than a Low Price

For generations, Darseys Furniture & Mattress has followed a simple Good, Better, Best approach to merchandise. We believe customers deserve choices at different price points, because every family has a different budget and different needs.

But over the past several years, we’ve noticed something important: the cheapest furniture isn’t always the best value.

Six to eight years ago, if you walked through our showroom, the majority of our sofas and loveseats would have fallen into our “Good” price category. Out of more than 80 sofas and loveseats, approximately 50 might have been in the Good category, 10–15 in Better, and only four or five in Best.

Today, we are intentionally changing that mix.

Refocusing on Better & Best

Darseys is putting more emphasis on Better and Best quality furniture and mattresses while continuing to offer affordable choices.

Why?

Because we believe there is a difference between buying something cheap and buying something that is a good value.

A sofa with the lowest price tag may save money on the day you purchase it. But if the cushions, frame, fabric, mechanisms, or other components don't provide the service you expected, that inexpensive sofa can become very expensive when it has to be repaired or replaced sooner.

Sometimes spending a little more upfront for better construction and better materials can provide considerably better service over the life of the furniture.

That is the value we want our customers to consider.

We're Not Walking Away From Affordable Furniture

We understand that everyone cannot afford the most expensive furniture or mattress. That's why Good will always have a place at Darseys.

Our goal isn't to simply sell more expensive merchandise. Our goal is to merchandise our showroom with products that we believe provide the best combination of price, quality, comfort, and expected service life.

We work hard to keep our prices competitive so customers can step up in quality without necessarily making a huge step up in price.

When we believe spending a little more will make a meaningful difference, we want to explain why. When we believe a lower-priced product will meet your needs, we'll tell you that too.

The Real Question: What Does It Cost to Own?

Instead of looking only at the price on the tag, we encourage customers to think about cost over time.

A $400 sofa that needs replacing much sooner isn't necessarily a better value than a $700 sofa that provides years of additional service.

The same principle applies to mattresses, recliners, sectionals and much of the furniture in your home.

Price tells you what something costs today. Value tells you what you're getting for your money.

After 140 years in business, we've learned that the two aren't always the same.

140 Years of Learning What Works

Darseys has been serving customers since 1886, and experience has taught us a great deal about furniture.

We've watched styles change, manufacturers change, construction methods change and customer expectations change. We've also had the opportunity to see how products perform after they leave our showroom.

That experience influences what we choose to put on our floor.

Our renewed focus on Better and Best isn't about chasing higher prices. It's about putting more merchandise on our showroom floor that we can confidently recommend to our customers.

We still want to have something for different budgets. But increasingly, we want our showroom to represent products that we believe offer better quality, better comfort and better long-term value.

That's the direction we're taking Darseys.

Good. Better. Best.

We'll still offer all three.

We're simply putting more emphasis on Better and Best — because sometimes spending a little more today can mean spending a lot less tomorrow.
